E3 2013: More details about Mad Catz’s Android-powered game console Project M.O.J.O.

Last week Mad Catz announced a rather large amount of news regarding their peripherals under the GameSmart brand of technology. Along with that news came the announcement that the company would be getting into the Android-powered game console market with Project M.O.J.O., planning to officially unveil it at E3 2013 which kicks off today with press conferences while the showroom opens up tomorrow.

IGN managed to snag some exclusive information regarding the actual hardware that will make up Project M.O.J.O. along with one very important piece of information which could put this console ahead of its competition which consists of other units like Ouya and GameStick. Onto the hardware first though…

According to Mad Catz, Project M.O.J.O. is still in the prototype stages but as it sits right now the console with 16GB of internal storage which is expandable through the use of MicroSD cards. It will also ship with Bluetooth Smart 4.0 with whatever the latest version of the Android OS is at the time (most likely 4.2+) it launches. Project M.O.J.O. will have two USB ports for wired gamepads and other accessories, HDMI, Wi-Fi, and a headphone port to round everything off.

Mad Catz hasn’t yet released information on how much RAM their console will come with or what chipset it will use but did confirm it was ‘investigating’ using Nvidia’s upcoming Tegra 4 chipset. Project M.O.J.O. would also come equipped with the same technology Nvidia’s handheld Android-powered gaming unit Shield currently has if the company chooses to use the Tegra 4 chip, meaning players would be able to stream full HD games from their PC over a local Wi-Fi network and eventually online through Nvidia’s GRID.

One very important piece of information to consider when contemplating on whether to pick this console over the other ones currently available is that while Ouya, GameStick and other consoles will be using their own game/app stores, Project M.O.J.O. will natively be able to access Google Play and Amazon’s AppStore, a point that could put it ahead of its competition. It also helps that visually Project M.O.J.O. looks pretty slick. The console will also come with a modified version of their MLG-licensed C.T.R.L.R. controller which will also have a ‘mouse mode’ you will be able to turn on.

While there is no real launch date right now for Mad Catz console, the company also hasn’t mentioned anything about pricing yet but it is a safe bet it won’t be $99. Of course all of Mad Catz’s GameSmart peripherals will work with Project M.O.J.O. as well.
