YouTube announces new subscription plan along with details for it

We use YouTube a lot here at DroidGamers, whether it be posting trailers from other developer’s channels, or posting trailers and gameplay videos from our own channel, and now even uploading previous TwitchTV streams to YouTube. So with YouTube’s announcement of a paid subscription where people can pay to view videos without the ads, you could now watch everything without the ads. This is especially good for the long TwitchTV streams we have, and will continue to, upload onto YouTube. Content creators also need to know the details regarding this new feature.

The announcement came the way of an email from YouTube which outlines the new feature as well as some of the changes that content creators will see in their account options who use this. The subscription will allow users to view YouTube views without ads across the entire YouTube platform. So it won’t be account specific like TwitchTV’s subscription model, but more like TwitchTV’s Turbo plan or how Netflix works. Here is how it will work for content creators, including how much they will earn:

YouTube will pay you 55% of the total net revenues recognized by YouTube from subscription fees that are attributable to the monthly views or watchtime of your Content as a percentage of the monthly views or watchtime of all or a subset of participating content in the relevant subscription offering (as determined by YouTube). If your Content is included in and viewed by a user in multiple subscription offerings, YouTube will pay you based on the subscription offering with the highest amount of net revenues recognized by YouTube, as calculated by YouTube.

Content creators who qualify to be a part of this will have their terms updated in their Creator Studio Dashboard. An interesting number to consider is that “mobile represents over half of all watchtime and mobile revenue is up 200% in the last year”. That’s a lot. For content creators, the changes will feel similar to those when YouTube updated the dashboard for mobile monetization three years ago.

So when will these changes happen? Right now YouTube has a launch date of June 15th, 2015 for the terms to go into effect for content creators. Basically you would pay one price to view videos without ads, and this would support content creators in the process. All of this should appear on the same date, June 15th, 2015, however that has yet to be confirmed with regards to users seeing the paid option becoming available, but it just makes sense it would all appear at the same time. So soon you will be able to watch all our videos without ads!
